These days, the process of recovering deleted file on Mac systems is done by reading each byte contained in the volume. While reading the data, the recovery tools also search each byte of the disc for the universal pattern of every file type that it supports. On encountering the beginning of an identifiable file, it would record the location of that file, and continue searching for the possible middle parts of that file, or the end of it. On getting a fairly accurate idea of the whole file, the tools offer an actual thumbnail sample of the file, and they display it as an option that could be recovered.

This takes place simultaneously with diverse file options for the same data parts on the disc under interpretation, and tendered as diverse files. Moreover, it can take place thousands of times each second. It is necessary to have various file outputs for same data part of the disk. The reason is that, many times, files are entrenched into each other and every interpretation of the data as a file is equally applicable, yet distinct. For instance, Jpeg files entrenched within a PDF would be provided as an independent Jpeg, without causing any interference to the PDF, being shown and recoverable as a file, including the entrenched Jpeg images.

Steps you should take immediately on realizing the loss of any significant data
First step (optional): Discontinue utilizing the disk of that Mac at the earliest. In case it happens to be a start-up disk, do not use that Mac anymore. If you were copying or downloading something onto a disk, discontinue doing that. Shut down your email or any other program that could write onto the disk, and there is no need to take avoidable actions. You need not necessarily shut down the computer, but just bring it to that mode where it will write the least on disk for the short future.

Second step (Optional): Now, download a data recovery program. As far as possible, do not download that on a disc from which you are going to recover the lost data, as downloading the recovery program will be written to the disc. In case the size of the data recovery program is small, under 4-5MB, you need not worry, as writing of just 5MB onto a disc having a very large capacity poses very little risk of writing on that very piece of data you wish to recover.

Third step: Start running the data recovery program. It is desirable to use a second disk or USB in order to recover the desired files. This is not absolutely essential if there is a single file to be recovered.
